Moving into a new home is much more than packing and unpacking boxes. It’s a learning process that takes time and patience—and attention to detail.

Before you unpack the last box, make sure you get acquainted with things like shutoff valves for water and gas, the fuse box or circuit breaker box, and the hot water heater thermostat. Are your flues closed? Do you need more insulation? Is the thermostat programmable? How can ceiling fans save money on heating or cooling bills? Do you need to do some weather-stripping?

Then there are the financial details. How will owning the home affect your taxes? What’s your borrowing power? And if you decide to refinance, what are the costs and potential benefits, and how do you know when it’s the right time?
